A bath is something in the western world that we take for granted. It's always there when we need it.
We bath in it, we shower in it, we dye our hair in it, wash the pets in it, we clean our brushes and rollers in it we sleep in it and even throw up in it.
I think we can all agree that a bath is something we probably couldn't live without.
Whether you have a nice free standing roll top bath in a luxury home or a basic steel bath in a council owned property, the bath does the same job regardless of where it is.
What happens when we take a bath for granted and it gets damaged?
A chip in a steel bath can get rusted over time, a chip in an acrylic bath can end up cracking, a chip in a fibreglass bath can harbour dirt and bacteria.
The feeling you get when your body brushes against damage on a bath is not a comfortable one and bath times should be a relaxing experience where you can wash all your troubles away.
So, what do you do?
Replace the bath? When you replace a bath there's a lot of things you need to take into account. There's the time it will take to do, on average a bath can take up to 8 hours to swap over but, what if something else needs to be done? How much more time and money is this simple process going to take?
What if the bath panel doesn't fit the new bath, what if the frame holding on the panel doesn't fit the new bath, what if the old bath waste doesn't fit or leaks, what if the waste hole is slightly off set, you'll need to change the waste pipe work, what if the flanged areas are slightly different, you'll have to change the water feed pipe work or install flexi pipes, what if and more likely possible, you break a tile or tiles in the removal process. Do you have spares? If not can you still buy them? Then you need to re seal the bath and of course you need to dispose of the old one which adds to landfill.
Now, popping down to your local hardware store to buy that replacement £100 bath has turned into more like £1000 bath.
How about a repair?
There are loads of resins and kits you can buy online cheap that all say they repair chips which, they actually do repair a chip but, you buy a white resin, you put it in sand it flat and hey look it's filled but, in the wrong colour white and now you have a sanded patch that will attract dirt and bacteria.
Now you are probably thinking that this guy writing this blog is really on a downer about damaged baths what are we going to do then?
I just wanted to paint the scenario that you will face if you try to do this on your own.
Well, I do have a good simple outcome to getting your bath back to its former glory quickly and cheaply.
Hire in a bath repair professional like Surface Repair specialists.
A bath repair professional can repair a chipped bath, a cracked bath, rebuild the edging on rusted steel baths and even carry out a full resurface cheaper than it will cost to replace it.
Typically a chip on a bath will cost around £190 and take just a couple of hours.
A crack can be repaired within a few hours and will cost around £265.
A ful resurface can be done in under 8 hours and cost around £390-£450
Although this seems a lot when you look at the figure it actually is a lot less when you start looking at what can happen if you put a figure on it.
Also it will be a professional and invisible repair that the DIY'er will not achieve.
So, the next time you see a chip and want to leave it think about the discomfort when you have a bath and the dirt and bacteria living inside it or how much it will cost you in the long run should it crack or get rusted.
Call in a professional before the coats start to add up.
